Well, here we have it, the very first (and for long time only) idea I had for the chapter...

...well, on a very basic level, that is. Asuka greeting them, Shinji and Aki popping in one by one revealing their status, with the grandparents ending up on the floor. But how they'd introduce themselves (especially the "Mama" punch from Aki), I struggled with quite a while. I had an amazing idea one day I got to sleep, and... well, you can probably guess where this is going: Next morning I could only remember that it was an amazing idea, but not what it was... :/
Eventually had this garden gnome idea, which wasn't as good (I think...?), but still seemed funny enough. I'm actually not sure how far spread these things are internationally (given there's animation movies about them, I guess they're at least a thing out there). Here, they've been around as garden decorations for quite a while, then fell out of favor as sign of being "spießig" (best translation seems "square"?), then "ironic" versions doing "funny" things like this became popular... and I'm actually not sure what the status is today, but I wouldn't be surprised if these versions would be regarded as "spießig" too now.

As for the grandparents, I was considering for quite a while if I should keep their appearance obscured as running gag (and so I wouldn't have to come up with a design... >_>), but I figured pretty early that it'd become too tricky to work around that. I mean, I already had to awkwardly use a text balloon here (didn't even have that line in the script). And regarding "not having to come up with a design", I thought I could at least still save that until next time, but I already ended up having to do that now after all, if only for the back view...
